Fall Into A Good Book...

Pumpkins and Football and Turkeys oh my!!!  The school year is under way and your library has many items to keep you busy and informed.

First I would like to remind you to continue to have your students drop off their books in the morning.  This is really a big time saver for us and it helps to keep the classes on time when they check out.

AR does work, however, we are limited on the computers that will run properly. We have 3 in the libraries that are marked AR. Your students are welcomed to use them anytime when the library classes are not working on them. This new program is not as user friendly as the older one.  It may take several attempts to find the book you are looking for. It also helps if the students include the author's name or use the AR book finder and find the quiz number.

Don't forget to use the IU Learning Portal- If you need help with your login or password, please let me know so I can help. Several new databases added... Check out the new Show and Share site. If your students have made a video and you would like to add it to the secure server let me know and I can get you the information and directions to add to the site.

Merry Month of May

With the last stretch ahead of us and as we are winding down, I want to say "thanks" for your help and support through out the year. I have one very small request and that is to be on the look out for lost and strayed books from the library.  Students claim they have all been returned and once in a great while  they miss the "blip" from the scanner. Most of the time, though they can be found in desks, bookbags and even on the classroom book shelves. We would appreciate a gentle reminder from you if you could.

I hope that the sites I've sent you so far have been helpful, and wanted to send out one more batch that I have found to be really good. Check them out when you have the time.

1. Have students who need some music?  Here is an amazing website that
contains music scores of classic music to use.  The International Music
Score Library Project has an extensive collection of music that can be
browsed by computer, timeline, genre, instrumentation or recordings.

2.  Some classes are doing research, and a big part of that is the
thesis.  If you want something extra to show students how a thesis
works, try this website called Thesis Builder.  This particular one is
for persuasive essays and is easy to use:

3. Need to convert docs to pdfs?  How about the reverse?  And don’t
forget images or videos!  This site does it all – from documents, to
video, to audio, to images…the conversions are endless but quick!  No
need to wait on email – it’s done in realtime!  www.online-convert.com (http://www.online-convert.com/ )

4. This is an alternative to powerpoint but with some zing!  With
280slides, the user can download a ppt (at this beta version, only pptx
can be downloaded), create new presentations, and then download them
onto your computer with as a pdf, powerpoint (all versions), and,
document.  You can even embed it into a website for others to view as
well.  Please remember this is a beta version, so there may be glitches,
but hopefully they’ll get it all worked out and ready to roll.

5. Need a screen capture software?  Try this great website!  It gives
you five minutes of recordable screen capture with audio to download or
save in your FREE account.  If you want to show students how to do
something using software or any other ideas you can think of, this would
be a great tool, not only for teachers, but students as well!

I will continue to keep you updated on new Web 2.0 tools and sites that are helpful to us and our students. If I can help in anyway, please let me know.

March Right In and Grab a Great Book..

Spring is supposed to be around the corner. Perhaps it will appear when we least expect it. That is what happens sometimes when I try to find the "Just Right book". The book that I least expect to like, ends up being a great book!!  The old saying is that "you should not judge a book by it's cover", but really, I believe that most of us do! In working with your students I find that most either have a genre or author in mind. If they don't it is all in the selling of a book. The publishers have taken a tip or two from the media departments and have helped the illustrators and authors create  "catchy" titles and designs for the covers. I encourage our students to look at the covers, (front and back) closely and to open the book up to the first page or so and read to see if the lead is something they would like. Finding the "Just Right book" sometimes is not as easy as one thinks.

What book are you reading this month?  Post it here

I'm reading.......  The Shallows: What the internet is doing to our brains    by Nicholas Carr

New Year.... New Reads

Hope the Christmas break was a restful one. It is hard to believe that we are almost half way through another school year.

Many classes are starting to work on their research and informational pieces. Please remind your students to check out our library webpage. Listed there you will find links and sites that are related to their topics. In addition, listed are databases that will save them time and energy sifting through ads and spam.

Also, BIG UNIVERSE has many non-fiction titles and encyclopedias online that they can access and use for their research as well.

There are some great online tools for creating note cards, organizers and citation writers. One that is outstanding is:

Check out the webpage for more.
I am available to work with your kids and their research. Please let me know when and what part of the process I can help with.
You can check out our new titles on our homepage. Click the catalog tab at the top. On the left click on Destiny Quest. Middle of the page click on Begin Your Destiny Quest. New title will show in the New Arrival Box.
