Welcome Back to a New School Year

Hope everyone enjoyed their short, fast summer and are now ready to start a new year. It has been kinda of crazy this summer around the book shelves here and there, but we are ready to focus on all the learning that will take place through out our libraries.
I am pleased to announce that our library system is now being hosted by Follett, which means we now have several new features for you to use. The links are here:  Clark Library , Klein Library and Rolling Ridge Library. Take a look around and remember you can request books from the comfort of your home or anywhere there is a connection. We can pull the materials and have them ready for you. Another way to access the library homepage is by going to the school of choice homepage and under student, you will find library.
New staff members can stop by so that you can be put into the system. Remember, to please have you class return their books in the morning if at all possible. It makes it so much easier for the aides when they are by themselves.

Also, we encourage borrowing form the other schools in our district. There is a drop down menu box on the webpage that you can access the other libraries. With that being mentioned, 2/3's of the books from Klein are in storage and are not available now. So that might be the exception. Please ask for help if needed.

The classes not scheduled for first semester, will need to see me about setting up a time for book selection. My calendar schedule will be posted on the board in the libraries.

Check out this cool site called Explore- Live cams available at explore.org

Have a great year...

Fall 2012

Welcome Back

The first several weeks are now behind us, and students and teachers are all settling in. I returned to find many boxes of new books just waiting to be opened and added to our collections. To me a box of new books is like a present that you can open again and again.
Many of the new books are Non-Fiction  ( books that give facts and information ) . The Common Core and the State Standards are emphasizing reading and understanding informational text,  Students in many classes, through the library have already been working with this teaching point.
In the next month or so I will be placing our Fiction book order. Please let me know if there are titles that you would recommend or would like to request. I will try to purchase these titles for our collections.

Technology:  The I.U. has changed the portal interface, the link off the Library Homepage is your best way in. Reminder, the library homepage is off the school's homepage, hidden under students. I will be distributing your new Log-in cards to you shortly. Your log-in username and password has not changed.  If you are not sure of your user name and password email me for that information.
They have added a wonderful site called Espresso Elementary. If you have time check it out. It is for Pre-K to 5th grade, (though I believe that 6th graders could use just as well)  cross-curricular, multimedia learning site with a wide range of interactive, video-rich classroom resources.Great for DI,. lesson plans and students can create their own account.
Discovery Education also has a new interface, however, if you would prefer the old look, which saved your folders and videos, click on the CLASSIC tab on the top right. The new platform automatically come up so you will need to click classic to see your saved items.
If you have questions or need assistance with the Digital Resource Portal call or email me so I can help you.

Looking forward to another great year of learning. I'm your resource for curriculum help, CC and state standards and professional and pleasure reading, ok...except for the HG type titles (had to put this disclaimer in or else I would be getting phone calls.)  My schedule is posted in each library as to where I will be for the week.

Question???????    Are you or do you see your students using Big Universe?  Trying to determine if I should continue the subscription. They have added over a thousand new titles.  The first 5 people who respond to this question in the comment box below, will receive a PRIZE!!

May 2012- Library News

As the end of the school year comes to a close, I would like to "Thank All" for the help and support that makes our school library a Great Place.  This year we have reached our largest circulation numbers ever!!  (I will post as we get closer to June).

Students are using the flexible times well and wisely.  Many are writing their own stories and reading many books on Big Universe as well as some using their own personal E devices.

We are fortunate enough to still have a budget for periodicals and books so our collections can grow and  be able to provide services to our community.

The last check out day will be May 21st, with all materials turned in by June 1st.

I look forward to another great school year ahead and wish all a fun fantastic summer.

Fall Into A Good Book...

Pumpkins and Football and Turkeys oh my!!!  The school year is under way and your library has many items to keep you busy and informed.

First I would like to remind you to continue to have your students drop off their books in the morning.  This is really a big time saver for us and it helps to keep the classes on time when they check out.

AR does work, however, we are limited on the computers that will run properly. We have 3 in the libraries that are marked AR. Your students are welcomed to use them anytime when the library classes are not working on them. This new program is not as user friendly as the older one.  It may take several attempts to find the book you are looking for. It also helps if the students include the author's name or use the AR book finder and find the quiz number.

Don't forget to use the IU Learning Portal- If you need help with your login or password, please let me know so I can help. Several new databases added... Check out the new Show and Share site. If your students have made a video and you would like to add it to the secure server let me know and I can get you the information and directions to add to the site.
